Monday Mixtape: The BRITs

OASIS – ROCK AND ROLL STAR
The Brits these days are mainly about terribly dull music and the hope that someone not very interesting will do something that might shock a granny into phoning Ofcom. Liam Gallagher oozes these qualities like no one else.
STEREOPHONICS – A THOUSAND TREES
I bought the “Word Gets Around” album off the back of hearing this performed live in 1995 when Stereophonics won the award for best newcomer. More recent attempts by Kelly Jones to become the new Rod Stewart haven’t dampened the impact of a great album.
PULP – COMMON PEOPLE
Did they ever play at The Brits? Did they ever win one? Probably not although they probably should. Everyone remembers where they were when Jarvis Cocker invaded Michael Jackson’s stage and shook his skinny tweed covered ass.
ROBBIE WILLIAMS – COME UNDONE
I can count on two fingers the number of Robbie Williams songs I can listen to the whole way through. The other incidentally is “Old Before I Die”. He has won more Brits than anyone else though…
THE BEATLES – YOU’VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY
1977 was the first year of The Brits and the fab four scooped a few awards. This track was all over the radio I presume as one of the standout tracks on their ‘77 Love Songs album.
FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE – DOG DAYS ARE OVER
Last year she was the best newcomer and this year she could potentially have the best album in the land… and she’s actually good.
TING TINGS – THAT’S NOT MY NAME
The next big thing of yesterday. This time last year you could move on a dancefloor for fear of falling over one of their dropped beats. Where’ve they gone?
THE ROLLING STONES – SATISFACTION
A track purely chosen for the satisfactory moment when Ronnie Wood wasted a drink by throwing it into the face of a fuelled up DJ twat called Brendan Block. Classic Brits moment.
BELLE AND SEBASTIEN – EXPECTATIONS
Remember the surprise of Steps and 5ive and everyone else if truth be told when Belle & Sebastien won Best Newcomer in 1999. Most surprising perhaps as it was for their third album.
CRAIG DAVID – WALKIN’ AWAY
A fitting little r’n'b throwaway tune for Craiiiig Daviiiid as he walked away from a record number of nominations without a single award.
DUFFY – WARWICK AVENUE
Lead single from the “Rockferry” album and it hasn’t been bettered. She’s since started to pastiche her own vocal and ride about on bikes promoting Diet Coke.
COLDPLAY – EVERYTHING’S NOT LOST
One of the biggest bands in the world for a while and playing packed out stadia around the planet. They’re still stuck up posh English twats though.
MANIC STREET PREACHERS – IF YOU TOLERATE THIS
The anti-establishment Richey Edwards would have turned in his grave (had he been dead and not just ‘missing’) as the Manics picked up a few awards for some of their most watered down tunes. Punk rock is well and truly dead.
BLUR – SONG TWO
Possibly the best all round band to come out of Britain in the last twenty years. They probably didn’t win enough Brits. They probably don’t care much though.
ARCTIC MONKEYS – WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN
Another of the semi-forgotten next big things. Every now and again they emerge from the woodwork with a northern drawl and songs about girls, nightclubs and how grim it all is up there.
SPICE GIRLS – WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE
That dress. Yes, that one.
SAM FOX – I ONLY WANNA BE WITH YOU
Despite her rape and pillage of this Dusty Springfield classic, Sam Fox did provide viewers of the ‘89 awards with a comic feast of blunders. So bad was the whole performance that live broadcasting was done away with for the next 18 years!
PET SHOP BOYS – WEST END GIRLS
I remember the Pet Shop Boys winning a lifetime achievement award a year or two ago and being mildly disgruntled. Looking back on it now they do write a brilliant wee pop song or two.
KLF – 3AM (GROWLING MACHINES REMIX)
Dropping dead sheep on music executives, firing blanks from a machine gun into the crowd, declaring your band has left the music industry… More of this sort of thing please!
ELLIE GOULDING – UNDER THE SHEETS (PARIAH REMIX)
Potential winner of the newcomer this year and apart from Florence and the Machine and Bruce Springsteen, the only person nominated I would listen to. She seems a nice girl and will fight it out with Little Boots to claim Lily Allen’s throne of pop next year.
